Lure Coursing Deerhounds

You are welcome to the Deerhound Fun Day on Saturday 14th March.  The day is for anyone to have fun with their Scottish Deerhounds, not just UK club members, and have a good social day, whilst teaching their dogs to chase a plastic bag!  You will be made very welcome. Photo courtesy of Liza Faircloth.

The event is at Falkland Farm, Washwater Common, Nr. Newbury (BSFA field). See here for the location. Book your dogs in at 10.00 am for a 11.00 am racing start. Could you please let Vanessa Lucas know via email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  if you are coming and how many Deerhounds you will be bringing.

There will be lure coursing and a long jump. The Nobys Quaich will be presented by David Gilhooly for the second year. If you have other dogs they can have a go too the only obligation is you have to bring a deerhound!

There will be some lovely stalls from the Greyhound Rescue and from Greyhound Gap. They are selling beautiful sighthound collars, amongst other things so bring plenty of money!!!  Also any donations and items / cakes etc would be most welcome to help them all continue doing a great job! Vanessa is also running a raffle for Deerhound rescue so if anyone can bring prizes or buy tickets that would be a great support.

Finally, if anyone has a gazebo it would be great if they could bring it. Vanessa is hoping for better weather than last year when it poured but you never know.

On Sunday 15th March the BSFA lure racing event will be held at the same venue. So why not make a weekend of it. This event is open to KC registered sighthounds. They must be prebooked a week in advance, details on the BFSA site linked via the directory.

Have a look on the forum too for a discussion on the weekend. Also please have a read of Vanessa's  article here about last years really excellent event.

These awful fires have also been discussed on the forum here and here.

Update: Sue and Kevin are extending the 2009 lure coursing season by popular demand and holding another event on October 18th. Racing starts at 11am as usual although you can arrive any time after 8.30am.

Sue would also like your  views as to whether a Christmas lure coursing event would be welcome and, if so, what date would suit most people?

Please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or if you would like to attend the lure coursing.

Chichester & District CS Open Show 25th January 2009

It was a very rainy day, but we were lucky to have a dry spell while we were in the outside ring.  The Judge was Chris Arthur and 29 Deerhounds were entered although some were unable to get there for various reasons.

  • Puppy was won by Dawn Hawker's pretty little bitch Wolfscastle Cilydd at Ghylladare
  • Junior was won by David & Jean Gilhooly's Freyja at Nobys
  • Open Dog was won by Ness Lucas & Cliff Dargonne's Packway Aconcagua  (Murdo)  who went on to win BOB and Group 3
  • Open Bitch was won by Lucas & Dargonne's Sorisdale MacKechnie for Packway (Isla)

Back to Nobys after the show except for BOB & BP where the hounds had a relaxing run in our deerfenced 5 acres, then a feast cooked by David for just under 40 Deerhound folk!
Cullen Skink and pea & ham soup to start, then a magnificent Venison casserole made with a mixture of Red and Sika Deer shot by a gamekeeper neighbour in Kintyre.
Folk brought puddings & drink, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
The last 2 years the weather has been kind to us & the photo in the garden was taken in sunshine, but alas not this year.  Some hounds quite rightly declined to come out into the wet, but some put on a brave face.
