Happy Deerhound ChristmasAs they say - 'the nights are fair drawing in' -well for the Northern Hemisphere anyway! So what might you and your hound like to do for Christmas and the New Year. Well here are a few ideas. Let us know what else might be happening near you too.

20th December 2009 The Redditch & District Canine Society hold their “Members Limited Show” which includes two classes for deerhounds judged by Ms. A. Defaye and a fancy dress class judged by Mrs Christmas. Venue is at Mappleborough Green Village Hall, Nr Redditch, B80 7BT, UK. Membership is £2 single, £3 joint. Schedules can be obtained from here. Entries close on 1st December 2009.

31st January 2010 Chichester & District Canine Society "Open Show" with five deerhound classes judged by Mr Alex Paisey. Schedules can be obtained from here. Entries close on 4th January 2010.

After the show Jean and David Gilhooly (Nobys Deerhounds) will be hosting a get together for the deerhound exhibitors at their home which is fairly local to the event (maps available at the show). There is ample secure ground for the deerhounds to unwind after the show and a Venison Casserole (for Humans) and Vegetarian Option will be available. It would be appreciated if competitors could bring a bottle , either wine or a soft drink, perhaps Ginger Beer, or a pudding. Please email Jean if you would like to come This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Lure Coursing/Running

Maybe you'd also like to have a Christmas lure coursing get together with team Rose at Rumbling Bridge, Scotland. Christmas dates are: Sunday 29th November Fun Meeting and 27th Dec 2009 Fun meeting with mince pies and mulled drinks. Please contact Sue to confirm attendance and the more deerhounds the merrier, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

To run off all those mince pies for both you and your dog. Why not try the CaniX Christmas event on 20th December 2009 at Cannock Chase, Nr Rugeley, Staffordshire UK with CaniXmas paws up the evening before. More details are available here.

Christmas Hound DecorationsIn between all this why not try some hound related shopping at Cusidh Cantrips with hound Christmas decorations (as pictured) available and much more for deerhounds, greyhounds, whippets and lurchers.

Deerhound, Chilli, DeerhoundWe also dropped in to the Gingley Gringo last weekend whilst out walking the hounds in Clumber Park, Nottingamshire, UK. Here is our Banrigh (right) shown with the Gringley Gringo's very own Twist (left). The Gringley Gringo sell a range of sauces, pickles and jellies for humans, not deerhounds. There is also a christmas craft fair, cafe and plenty of walks to be had in the area.

If All Else Fails...

Have a look at look at last years hillarious Christmas pictures here. We'd be glad to include any Christmas 2009 pictures!

Vanessa Lucas just emailed to let us know about a lure coursing event near Tenterden in Kent, UK (click for map). It will be on the 6th of December 2009.
The event is mainly for lurchers and a couple of whippets. However, they are planning to run an eight dog stake for Deerhounds. It's on a first come first served basis, so act quickly to avoid disappointment.
To book your place and for directions and details please phone Rob on 01580 764443.

Entry is £5.

I'll add further details here as I have them.

Update: Please be aware there are very few rooms now remaining at the hotel. As there are no other hotels in the area it is important to try and reserve your room as soon as possible even if you are just thinking of attending.  Please note that the hotel has a longer than usual cancellation policy.

Greetings from the U.S.!

Deerhound SpecialityFor those who do not get the Claymore, the newsletter of the Scottish Deerhound Club of America, the 2010 National Speciality web site is up and running (click to visit).

The Speciality is back on the east coast, May 11th to 16th 2010 and is in fact returning to the Basin Harbor Club in Vermont. This is the club's fourth time back at the wonderful, 700 acre, luxury resort in northern New England. Besides its great beauty and creature comforts, this site is perfectly suited to our show, as it has the facilities to host everything - from the show to lure coursing to racing - right on site.

This show is the biggest Deerhound entry in North America, with about 200 hounds. The premium list will be mailed this winter, and entries will close April 21st 2010. In addition, we are planning several educational programmes, such as a health, handling and deerhound standard seminars (there is sure to be a lively discussion at that last one!).

The hotel is located on Lake Champlain in Vergennes, just south of Burlington, Vermont, which is a short flight (or scenic drive) from either Boston, New York or Montreal.

We would like to extend a special invitation to our European friends, as New England is relatively close (well, relatively speaking). Click here for a Google Map of the area.

The Judges are, Elizabeth Chase, Monson, Massachusetts, Björn Fritz, Fritzen Deerhounds (click for website), Germany and Mrs. Patti Widick Neale, Alachua, Florida.

All the information about the show is on the web site, and we update it frequently, so please check back regularly. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact either of us show chairs (also called the co-dictators):
