Both ours jump, not something we've taught them. There was one instance when at a local country fair,
we entered Callie in the lure coursing. A very short course, Callie went off on a flyer got to the end
and cleared the stacked hay bales where the lure went, looking for it. Fergal has also jumped over that
orange plastic fencing while running a stright course:P

OMG dont tell Dirk he could do that, it would be a nightmare for us as we are surrounded by livestock on all sides. I NEVER encourage mine to jump - how do you keep them in?

Our Lurchers used to jump 6 foot fences with ease, but that was back in the day when dogs and owners were not handed asbo's for anti social doggy behaviour!
We've never taught Murph to jump, so as Trowsahound says, please don't tell him! he would be off down the park, chasing everything in sight!

Hello Lurch8252,

Wow, 6 foot ( 1,8 m) this very high.

I have build our fences 6 foot ( 1,8 m).

I think(hope) my Yoki can not jump over 6 foot fences.

Here in Germany is the problem, the hunters can shoot of dogs,
if this hunt wild animals.

Best regards

The main fence around our garden is 6 foot where we fenced it, but along one side is an alley that runs from our road to another little close and is maintained by the local council, it is only 5.5 foot. Our garden is quite big and as Murph was a serial digger, hubby put a 3.5 foot pretty fence around one section to stop the dogs getting in there. He has never attempted to jump this small fence. If we have little children round, they can play safely in there and not get knocked down or tread in pooh. I worried about the outer fence, Murph will stand up there and look over, as kids who walk past tend to talk to him, again, he has never attempted it.

Our Lurcher years ago used to love my neighbour, she used to bring him treats out, the fence between our then gardens was 6 foot and if he heard her come out with a treat, he would scale the fence with ease. Those dogs were taught to jump, Murphy never has.

our fence is 6 foot high and although our deerhounds all jump they never try to jump out of the garden even when in the front garden where the wall is only 3.5 foot high they just stand at the wall and wait for people to pass and pet them, saying that i wouldnt leave them in the front garden on there own but if they are out in the country they will jump whatever comes in front of them

Oh Doxhope, that reminds me of many years ago we had a bitch in season, in the kennel, neighbours 2 doors up had a Staff Bull Terrier called Boss, he didn't bother jumping their 6 foot fence, he went straight through it! he was found outside our back gate with his tongue hanging out, poor boy - where theres a will theres a way!

I learnt the hard way that a front garden fence would be handy..Torrum shot past me  on Christmas eve out into the snow and he was off down the street jumping ,leaping, spinning have a fab time...:woohoo: there I was chasing after in my suit screaming at my neighbour to help me catch him..I was sooo worried thankfully DD (darling daughter) brought the chocie lab out into the street which caused Torrum to go dashing back up to the house.Him and Dylan are quite a team now they had a ram raid on the kitchen cupboard the other night and got the malteasers..yeah and my sunday roast meat..

What a great photo and jump. Really clearing it nicely.

Ronan one of our deerhounds has also taken to 4 -5 ft wall clearance recently! Thanks Elise

Trevor that's a fine photo for this jumping deerhound thread. Yeaaah Milo! I'm just back this morning from purchasing some six foot farm gates for a new property I'm fencing. It has horse fence around the perimeter already to which I'm attaching square mesh fencing and then these gates. I hope to encourage the deerhounds to stay in while still allowing the deer to leap out. Having reread this thread however, I'm wondering if it's all been a waste of money! :S

Shelley, you have 7 Deerhounds and they co-exist with Deer. How have you trained the hounds to not chase and attack the Deer?

Thanks for your comments, with milo as regards jumping i started on very low jumps first, then certainly not untill he was over 2yrs did i increase the height, allthough to me some dogs are natural jumpers anyway. What i have also learned is to keep the nails short because of the pressure on the toes when landing.atb,trevor.(here is another photo)
