Re: The Westminster Kennel Club show 2011 7 years 2 days ago #32709

She is the daughter or grand daughter of Beardswood Freya.
Don't know any more than that!

Wouldn't it be fabulous if a Deerhound won Crufts too..........

Newell himself is sired by Thistleglen Leeds , who sired a whole lot of impressive pups - including Thistleglen Margot , who was one of the top winning deerhounds before Hickory came along. Thistleglen Neville , brother of Newell went to Asutralia as far as I know and has sired a few litters there .

Heard another interview today and am baffled by the numbers - they ( her handler , David Frei and 2 interviewers ) were talking on how much goes into te campaign of a showdog as successful as Hickory - she is in the lower ranks ( ! ) with something between US$100,000.00 - 200,000.00 spent on her (campaign ) per year ....some go up to $5-600,000.00 per dog per year - oh my gosh , I would grab this money and retire This is quite unbelievable to me , but had read similar figures a couple years ago . By now she should be back at home on her farm and become a regular dog again , which makes me feel quite happy for her .

As for Crufts , isn't Mr Dondina the BIS judge there , too - or was that in another year ?

Lots of money...But what could be so expensive?
Is it the professional handling that costs so much? The travelling around the world (?) to the important shows?

Hello Veronica,

How are you?

I have found this informations in the internet.

Citation:
"...A dog owner can expect to pay between $60 and $100 per day plus expenses. But a handler can make up to $2,500 in one shot if the dog they're showing wins Best in Show at, say, Westminster, the most prestigious dog show in North America. .... "END

Re: The Westminster Kennel Club show 2011 7 years 1 day ago #32725

It is not so much the show itself , but the time before - all dogs are champions , most of the group placing dogs have been shoen extensively around the country , most with professionel handlers and , of course , all those photo ads placed in various dog magazines - taken by prof. photographers and and and - Iam pretty sure the handlers get paid a monthly salary and extra for placements/wins . Hickory had "only " 14 all breed best in shows in 2010 ,and won the deerhound specialty plus many , many group placements - but there were some dogs present who had 50 or more.....The $60-$100 wold then be the entry fee , travel , food , hotels on top , this adds up pretty quickly.

Love the Post Gazette article. you're right Rob just like a DH. Lure coursing picnics for Finn will consist of a box full of cheese, ham, dog biscuits etc only for him to turn his nose up at all this; "where are the viennese whirls?" he'll demand!!

Very nice article , Robb ...to me Hickory seemed rather the more stressed the longer she had to be there and do press /tv interviews tolerate all those photographers and media events - , deerhounds do get quiet whe unhappy/stressed out . And , not all deerhounds are " laid back " in that way - I love those deerhouds who are a bit more " animated " , active , into things and love to do stuff with their owners, basically no matter what - 2 of mine are that way and what fun ! Of course , compared to the average "24 hours tailwagger " they are still super relaxed and laid back ...

Interesting indeed Rob. I just hope there isn't a 101 Dalmatians reaction with a flood of deerhounds for fashion/commerce.
