What a wonderful result. However, how come none of the DH's have any hair - no mane, hardly any furnishings, definitely not 3 to 4 inches of coat length. To me they look well overgroomed. I suppose this is the American way but I'm glad we can show 'em hairy here. I did notice at Crufts last year there were DH exhibitors from mainland Europe stripping out all the neck hair on their dogs!

I do hope DH's are not going to become TOO 'primped and preened'. Nice and clean is one thing but overgooming and overtrimming is another.

I noticed the 'over grooming' on the last few dog shows that were televised. It must be a new thing...never saw that 10 yrs ago...what brought that on anyway? The Italian judge who did BIS is also judging BIS at Crufts. We are still overjoyed that a Deerhound was finally awarded BIS. He was a lovely judge to watch...They said it was the first, shame on them then, since the Deerhound was at the very first Westminster show....no one can dare say that in 135 years there hasn't been another Deerhound worthy....Sighthounds are often overlooked, at all shows, lots of judges just aren't familiar enough with them, but...they should know the standard like the back of their hand.

On several pics and videos one can see that she has been groomed a lot( and stripped ! ) , but , also the coat is held in place with spray , it is longer than it appears at first glance - I find , that for Westminster , the " Crown " , all seem to go to extremes ( in every which way , grooming , handling - which was done beautifully with Hickory - and with the money funding the campaigns for the winners and placers )- which is all a bit of a shame but the way it is. Still , Hickory is lovely ,showed very well , has a wonderful gait and will soon be home on her big farm where she can be a deerhound again - apparently chasing rabbits and deer .
The deerhound people and clubs are seemingly floodded with inquiries and requests now at the moment - for videos/interviews and pups - saw some nice ones with longtime owners /breeders trying to make it clear , that they are truly not a breed for everyone and am sure/hope/think it will blow over soon .

Here's a short article from the Outdoor Life in relation to Hickory's great win.
'Things you didn't know about Deerhounds'

www.outdoorlife.com/blogs...bout-deerhounds

and a short fun article from the Washington Post
www.washingtonpost.com/wp...1021606888.html

The volume of coverage is quite amazing.

One thing I can't find though and would like to is the pedigree of GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind. Would anyone know where that would be held in the public domain on the web? The UK Champion pedigrees are on the club site with most UK deerhounds also on the Kilbourne site. But I don't know how to locate the US dogs?

I am a little bit worried about this win... although of course it is great on the one side... but from "the best kept secret in the canine world" to the covers of dog magazines and newspapers...

As far as I can tell from all the ( american ) deerhound lists I am on , most breeders/clubs are floodded at the moment with requests for everything , not only deerhounds but also interviews/information and and and - most are thrilled about the recognition the breed finally got but I do hear some worried undertones and in all interviews I heard/read/saw so far the deerhounders do make clear , that deerhounds are not for everyone and , that they are not readily available , that potential owners are very much screened and so on . Knowing modern day culture I'd hope , it blows over soon and I for sure do hope , that no breeder takes advantage of the risen demand - the way I experienced them , I think , all will be responsibel and protective just the way they always have been . Here , just as an example , a link to the tv interview the breeder of some of my deerhounds was asked to give - she also has been floodded with requests- I think everyone on this continent who has a webaddress having to do with deerhounds has been ....

Verena, thank you!
I have very mixed feelings too...
I am not a breeder, just an owner of this wonderful breed and I always thought, that it is important to keep this secret. To beware the breed of getting too much into the eye of the public. With all disadvantages this would have.
I hope, that this new popularity will soon be over.
