As Pam mentioned in Deerhound Club show thread, we are comingover to the UK. We are planning on doing a bit of sightseeing around the NW Highland area. Does anyone have any suggested places to see and stay?
We are both excited about our trip and it was in the late Eighties when I went to the UK. Never got to Scotland due to time and money...LOOK OUT SCOTLAND, HERE WE COME :woohoo:

If want somewhere deerhound related, you could try Abbotsford where Sir Walter Scott lived with his deerhound, its a lovely old victorian mansion in a great setting. Its in the borders not far from Peebles.

Other than that I adore the north west coast for scenery and wilderness, particularly the sea lochs on the mainland but opposite the Isle of Skye. Majestic mountains, wild empty moorlands, and fjord-like sea lochs, its gorgeous! And dont forget to visit some distilleries......hic!

The west coast of Scotland is all really beautiful, Plockton, Torridon, and up to Cape Wrath is well worth doing. The drive down to Oban "gateway to the Isles" is just wonderful. You might pay a trip to the Isle of Mull from there and have a deerhound fix as there are 2 living there who appear on this forum. Further south still is the whiskey Isle, by ferry from north Kintyre, the Isle of Islay, lots of distilleries to go round and sample their wares. If you did get down as far as Kintyre you would would of course just have to come and stay with/see us. There are 3 deerhounds to cuddle and we would love to meet you. We live on the north east of Kintyre looking out over the sea to the Isle of Arran.

Maybe see you at Crufts

Argyll is just as beautiful as any part of Scotland. Ferry across from Gourock to Dunoon and drive through up to Lochgilphead-very knowledgeable deerhound owner and judge lives very near near there too! Then down to Kintyre and back via Isle of Arran to Ayrshire Lovely drive down Ayrshire coast with some good golfing (if you golf)along the way! The north is very beautiful but folk often miss the beauty of the lower hills and lochs. Guess where I hail from then!!!! Have a great trip and hope to meet you at Crufts

Where are you from, Crackadog? If you ever come back to Argyll to visit relatives/friends perhaps we could meet up with the dogs for a walk.

Beautiful photos Wendy. I assume it is still going to be quite cold in April/May?

Unfortunately we won't be there for Crufts but we will be at the Breed Show and also for the WELKS show. Haven't been to Wales either so this trip is going to be very exciting and interesting for me. Most of our time though, I think, will be spent in Scotland.

Sorry but no. I posted those because they were fairly recent but all the snow has gone now. In April and May you can get some wonderful sunny weather and May is often quite a dry month for here. The west coast in a very wet place though and the weather very changeable. Last year we had hardly any rain from Easter for a period of 7 weeks. We have our own water supply and nearly ran out. Come prepared for anything and everything.

Hello,

I have found a interesting article in the internet about the project from Paul Lister in the Highlands.

Citation: ...."Lister's single-minded vision is to turn the clock back to a time when the Big Five of the British Isles - elk (moose), wolf, brown bear, lynx and boar - roamed freely in the forests that veiled this land. ...."

Joerg Yoki replied the topic: Scottish Highland - My Heart’s in the Highlands
Hello,

Robert Burns “My Heart’s in the Highlands.”

"Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go." END
