TOPIC: Feeding a raw diet

Feeding a raw diet 9 months 3 weeks ago #43500

My puppy is14 weeks old and I am gradually introducing some raw meat into his diet. He seems to be doing well with this. I am wondering how much in weight he should be eating of raw meat should this be his only food. He is currently eating Eukanuba puppy large breed and the recommended daily amount is 500g. My question is how much raw meat would be the equivalent, would it be the same amount or more?. I haven't fed a raw diet before and would appreciate advice from anyone feeding their deerhound this type of diet considering his age of course.

Hello, the suggested daily amount of raw food for a 14 week old puppy is 7.5% - 8.5% of their current bodyweight. It isn't generally recommended that you feed both raw and kibble as they are digested at different rates. This is a really good, useful and user friendly resource dogsdinner2.webs.com/
We changed to raw when our oldest deerhound (Fergal) was about six months old. He was very ill as young puppy and had to have a couple of feet of gut removed. As a result, every food we tried (including the prescription ones) went straight through him. Raw was a last resort which worked brilliantly. He loves it - absolutely everything - and has just celebrated his 9th birthday.
Our younger girls are also raw fed. One was weaned straight to raw and the other swapped from kibble when she came to us at 14 weeks.
Good luck.
Sue

Thank you for your reply.I had guestimated about 8% of his body weight so it is good to read your recommendations. I have also read it's not recommended to mix the raw with kibble so it'll time to switch straight to raw. Having not had a dog / pup for some years I was looking for some confidence and having read your post I have that now.
Good for Fergal! Did he eat it feathers and all?

Oh yes, absolutely everything. I snip the beak and claws off, just because they look sharp and knowing what an utter pig Fergal is, he tends to swallow things whole - I don't want them to damage the old bugger. However, I know most people don't bother and I'm probably worrying unnecessarily.

I'am giving them about 10% of their bodyweight.
All 10.

Hello Lieve,
Is that 10% for an adult or puppy?
Thank you for your reply

10% of the expected bodyweight for adult dogs
Puppies have the same amount, at first in several meals.
Bitches have 450grs, male 650grs
that is a little bit more than 10 %
The male dogs have a weight about 50kgs
Female about 35kgs

Errrrmmm....... I fully admit that I'm not a maths genius, but surely 10% of 35kg is 3.5kg (or 3500 grams). 350 grams is just 1%.
If you're feeding bitches 450 grams that's around 1.28% of expected body weight?

We didn't go by a % of the expected body weight as, in our experience, the adult weight can vary so much. For example one of our girls never weighed more than 32 kilos. Another, at her ideal weight, was 43kg. neither was over or underweight, just different body types.

This raw thing isn't an exact science. At the end of the day, if the dog is healthy and happy, go with what works for you!

Yes 10% of a large 50kg dog would be 5kg of meat per day. It can't be as much as that. My pup is about 15kg so 10% is 1.5kg per day. He won't eat that much. I think today he's had about 600g and he doesn't want anymore and boy has he got plenty of zip so he must be okay. I'll just have to play it by ear. I just don't want to be under feeding him. He's not greedy at the moment and does seem to need encouragement to eat. Having said that he's eaten more raw meat in weight today than the recommended weight of the Eukanuba.

Ok, numbers are not my best.
We have 9 deerhounds, 4 males and 5 female and 1 little magyar,
I take every day between, 7 and 7.5kg meat and bones a day for all the dogs together,
They eat in 3 groups, female, male and the 2 little ones, magyar is eating alone.

I do not feed a BARF diet, my dogs have a mix of home cooked vegetables, mostly raw meat and bones, berries, nuts, bread, eggs and so on...
They even some times get commercial dogfood.
My dogs can eat everything I can eat and even more.

Finn started off on commercial raw which was good but I went down the diy route. I thinks it's a percentage of current weight. So if a puppy weighs 20kg then 10% would be 200gms. I feed Finn now he's 17 months and 40 kg 2%. Then there are days when he doesn't eat at all mainly because he's too hot.
