TOPIC: How old was your puppy?

How old was your puppy? 3 years 2 months ago #42353

Just curious. Those of you with 'pure' deerhounds that you got as puppies. How old was your puppy when you got it? I understand that some breeders are letting their puppies go at just 8 weeks. To me (as a non-breeder), that is far too young. A breed such as this needs the best start it can get which to my mind means appropriate diet, rest, exercise, play with others of the breed, vaccs, etc. What are your opinions? I will add that I have bred (very successfully) animals other than dogs, which I never let go at just 8 weeks.

Hi there. Both mine are deerhounds.
Daisy was 13 weeks as the litter had had upset tummies ant one stage and put back their vaccs.
Bella was 12 weeks exactly.
I have had lurcher pups in the past as young as 4 1/2 weeks , she was actually an amazing dog , a true treasure.
I do agree though that Deerhounds shouldn't go until at least ten weeks.

It seems that the time scale for puppies leaving the place they were whelped differs immensely depending on breed & also individual breeder. Personally I would not let a pup go until we had received the results from ALL health checks completed, (not just the ones prescribed by the KC). For a deerhound it would be 10 week minimum if it were going to an experienced owner, 12 week normally & of cause longer if the situation required it. The breeder of our bedlington held on to Bailey for a couple of weeks as we were going away & we did not want it disturbed by change in circumstances. We picked him up on the way home !

Murphy was exactly 12 weeks, he had had all his jabs etc. I've had Lurchers about 8 weeks, it depends on the breeder really. I thought 12 weeks was the norm.

Hello,

My Yoki was 9 weeks and my Lucy 12 weeks old.
No problems with both.

But I think also 12 -14 weeks is the best.

Regards

Rowan , the newest member of our tribe was fully 11 weeks old when we picked her up. It was the best timing asIwas off for a 2Week holiday before going back to work , so thatlet me do some eerious bonding with her. She was lucky as my husband was at home all the time with her .
