signs of heart problems 4 years 2 months ago #41046

I am wondering what are the signs and symptoms of heart problems in deerhounds?

My big boy who is 5 and a half has been 'off' lately. Not much energy, retching but not vomiting and generally a bit grumpy. When out for a walk this morning, I met a lady who said she is a reiki master and she assessed him and felt that he had a lot of heat coming from his chest. She felt that it is his heart so I have made an appointment with the vet which I am dreading.

So I would be grateful for all and any thoughts from you all - thank you

The symphtoms are coughing and no endurance, but it is a complex problem. You should see a Vet and have an EKG made.
The heat from his cheast sounds rather than some infectous or fewer or perhaps muscle problems.

Heh. I once had a reiki master rush up to my deerhound as we were about to enter a building. She was very concerned because she could "tell" he had suffered terrible trauma perhaps in a car accident. She put her hands on his head and along his body, "reading" his symptoms. Turned out she was a homeless person with mental problems. This is not to say that your reiki master was not on the up-and-up but given her diagnosis I hope so.

Still, Greycloud, as you say, your boy isn't feeling well at the moment and a visit to the vet is probably the best idea. When my boy's heart failed, and this was at the end, he stopped eating and spent his days lying quietly in the garden under a big cherry tree. He only summoned enough energy to come back inside the house in the evenings. Broke my heart. I had to have him PTS. He was much much older than your boy though. I am praying for happier results for you.

Thank you all for your concern, help and good wishes. The news is good - I managed to get a vet appointment for this morning and his heart is fine - he has a mild infection in his throat and is now on antibiotics. Thank goodness it is nothing more serious = I was so worried.

Thats such good news, I always hold my breath when someone says their Deerhound, or any dog is not well and it brings back horrible memories. I'm so pleased he has a throat infection, well, Im not pleased, but pleased he hasn't got heart problems. Murphys heart was always checked and he had a good strong heart. I hope he has a speedy recovery, plenty of ice cream!!!!! Get well soon too Wendy!
