Hi Liza & Julian..... lovely hounds :). I think we may have met last year at Windsor (maybe)? Elsie Grey was a puppy (Rehomed Deerhound) and I think she tried to eat your lunch  Infact I am sure she tried to eat strawberries too  If we meet again, she has learnt some manners now!! Just about

I remember! She was lovely :)
Glad I don't have to protect our lunch quite so much next time!
Are you coming to Newbury?

Only about forty, I made a bit of a blunder with dates. You'd think that after all this time, I'd get it right. But no more for about two weeks and then the stuff will hit the fan as we have scanned about 1100, all due by the end of April. I normally lamb all of them outside, but as they are carrying so many triplets plus quite a few quads, the multiples are coming inside in the next few days.

Wow I didn't realise they could have that many ! The sheep around here only seem to have twins , so I assumed thats all they could ever do. Is it only certain breeds or conditions that have such a high yield ?

Alan, do you foster the extra lambs onto ewes that just have one?

They are carrying more lambs than usual this year and twins are the ideal number as not many mothers have enough milk for three lambs never mind four and quads are almost always tiny and therefore less likely to be viable, so we never want to have those. The x-breds I have are very prolific and some years, they just overdo it.

This is really difficult to do when they are lambing outside as they would have to be "wet fostered", which entails soaking the foster lamb with afterbirth and fluids the second she has had her own single lamb and before she has seen or licked it. The chances of me being there at the crucial time and having a spare lamb handy is unlikely, so this year I will put a bunch of single mothers next to the triplets in a building so the chance of a few successes is higher as they will be easier to supervise. They have a very strong maternal instinct, but if they supect foul play, they will reject the foster lamb.
