TOPIC: Looking for a Deerhound

Looking for a Deerhound 2 years 1 month ago #43089

Hi.

We are looking for a Deerhound to adopt. Any information regarding a Deerhound needing a good loving home would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Dink, the UK Deerhound Club rescue co-ordinator is Sam Taylor, 01530 243138, or they do come up for rescue occasionally in rescue centres. Good luck with your search. Wigster x

Thanks so much for the reply Brodie. I will give her a ring. We sadly had to have a our gorgeous OES PTS a while ago and would love to have another 'large' rescue. I met loads of them by chance at Crufts and just fell in love with them all!! Happy Christmas x

How about a deerhound cross?

Hereford and Worcester Animal Rescue currently have 2:

Charlie (male; 2-3 years): s3.zetaboards.com/HWAR_Fo.../7819253/1/#new

Nova (female; 2-3 years): s3.zetaboards.com/HWAR_Fo...opic/7829737/1/

Would you consider a deerhound cross?

Hereford and Worcester Animal Rescue have two at the moment - both look pretty big

Charlie: s3.zetaboards.com/HWAR_Fo.../7819253/1/#new

Nova: s3.zetaboards.com/HWAR_Fo...opic/7829737/1/

Thank you so much for the links. I looked up the rescue centre and then spoke to them on the phone. Sadly our fencing is about 4 1/2 ft and they said that it's too low. We can't make it any higher and it's too large. We also have livestock which it may chase. I am so disappointed and sad to think that we can't have one of those gorgeous hounds. Thank you so much again!!

Thank you Wigster!! I spoke to someone today who has a lovely Deerhound, but my fencing isn't high enough and we have livestock which I believe is an issue. Thanks for your help though - much appreciated!!

Thank you so much!! I had a look & phoned the rescue, but my fencing is not high enough. We also have livestock which they thought was an issue. I think I will start looking for an elderly Deerhound maybe. Thank so much again!!

(Sorry no idea why I have got two identical posts! Don't know what happened there - although I remember I thought one hadn't been submitted so wrote it again)

Regarding your fencing and livestock - its definitely something to think about- pretty much any deerhound or deerhound cross you offer a home to has the ability and (with the livestock) the incentive to jump out - and they definitely like chasing things - especially bigger things. What the rescue have said to you applies to any other deerhound or deerhound cross you may be interested in.

So if you really do want to offer a home to a deerhound - how would you manage the situation - is there anyway of providing a secure area they could exercise in?

Are your livestock securely fenced? Could they be?

Many people manage to live happily and successfully with a deerhound (or lurcher) and livestock.

Or maybe you may need to consider that a deerhound is not for you. But many other - actually pretty much most - breeds of dogs or mixtures have the capability and interest to chase livestock - and may types of dogs are good fence leapers (collies and lurchers especially).

Thank you for all of that & I think I was the one that sent 2 messages (new to forums!!).

You are absolutely right in what you have said. We have had a Lurcher (who was blind) and an OES who was very old and we had no problems, so may be I shouldn't worry about our animals, as they are fully secure. We have goats and they can jump too!!

I think I will have to have a look at other breeds of rescue dogs. It's very sad, as I am spoilt for choice, as there are so many out there waiting for homes.

Thank you again & enjoy your Dearhounds!

I hate to say that low fences & livestock along with a deerhound who has not been brought up with livestock may cause a problem in the long run. Perhaps need to consider a different breed :(

I agree about stock & boundary height. Exercise can always be provided last another location. Many hounds live in towns & are exercised elsewhere !!

There is no reason to stop loving and wanting a deerhound. I waited almost 10 years before I had my first pedigree one.
Take care :)

You are right. All good things are worth waiting for. I have had a lady from the Deerhound Rescue in the UK show me some lovely photos of her Deerhound with a Llama!! So it goes to show that it may be down to training and introduction to the livestock. Take care too.
