I know it has been ages since I have been on, for that I do apologise!

Just wanted all my Scottish Deerhound friends out there to know that we had to say goodbye to Dougal this morning. He had been a bit hingy and lethargic, just not himself, so I thought.

Turns out my darling boy had cardiomyopath, no cure and even with meds, no quality of life. Sadly a situation I would wish on nobody but we had to do what was best for our boy.

So now the house is too quiet, empty nest syndrome is kicking in and I'm going from room to room sobbing as I spot another of his cosy blankets!

I am so very sorry to hear you sad news. How old was Dougal and how was he diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy? I only ask as my boy Murray has now gone 7 and I worry about him as he has become quite irritable and doesn't seem to want to come out on walks ect. Hope you don't mind me asking at this sad time.

Haven't seen a post from you in ages. Very sorry dear sweet Dougal has passed. That is exactly how cardiomyopathy shows its wicked self, the poor dog loses all energy and stops eating until there is little choice but to have him PTS.
It is heartbreaking but you did the right thing.

So very sorry about Dougal.
How awful for you to have to make such a decision. I know this thread is to remember Dougal but can I add my own experience of DCM in the hope it may help someone else? Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a horrible thing and I lost my own dog to it last year at just 5yrs old. I miss him every day. DCM was something I'd never heard of. Anyone with a newly diagnosed dog please take heart as he did survive 18months and he had a good quality of life right up till the second he died, which was fortunately in his sleep. The books will tell you that they cough, my dog didn't cough until he was almost in cardiac arrest. It was only that he wasn't his usual self that I took him to the vets for a check up and it was spotted.
So please watch for signs of unusual reluctance to exercise, restlessness of a night, laying down and then standing up again, lethargy and going off their food. There maybe a visible pulse in the neck. Your dog may have cold feet and ears due to poor circulation. Check their resting heart rate and breathing. If you are at all concerned take your dog to the vets.
Again from one deerhound lover to another, so sorry about Dougal. However if your post means someone spots the early signs of DCM and it saves a deerhound, what a legacy.

I've yet to read a post like this that doesn't fill my eyes with tears. It's unimaginable.

I'm so sorry and even though I wouldn't even know if I walked passed you in the street, I'm willing everything for you that makes this next bit easier.

With lots of love,
Kerry, and Otto. xxx
