Already wrote something about the European Coursing Weekend. This was also the first time that we took Connor, together with the other dogs, for a camping-weekend.
He did great, experienced a lot of new things.
When we got home we had to dry the tent and suddenly could not find Connor. It appeared that he was in the tent again, so that says it all....
Sorry, not all the pictures are of good quality.

After all the nice things we experienced with Connor in the weeks since he came over to us, this week was very sad.
Mondayevening he was in the garden when we heard this awfull shouting. It appeared that he had ran into a (very slim) pole and after visiting the vet it was obvious that he broke his leg (right behind leg).
We could take him home with an emergency splint.

The next day we went to a (very good) orthopedic surgeon. Diagnosis: bone fracture of the shin bone.
So he was operated that same evening. We could take him home on wednesday morning, with several screws and plates, an external fixation.
We are so sorry for him, being so young and then having to go through all this.

For the next 5 weeks we will have to keep him quite, then go back to the surgeon and when the X-rays are okay the screws will be removed. Then some more weeks of keeping him quite and hopefully everything will be okay then. Looks like a good change that it will heal very good.
But it is afwull having a 4 month old puppy who has to be kept quite, only short walks on lead etc.
I must say that he behaves very well and acts like it is not too bad. We made a separated space for him in the living room, and in the shed, and even outside so that he can get some fresh air when the weather is good. We have to keep him away from the other dogs, but also take care that they do not become strangers to each other.

The screws look quite big, but don't seem to bother him. So, we and Connor will be going to some difficult weeks. Let's hope for the best....

Poor Connor, we had planned so many nice things for the weeks ahead. Well, this will have to wait till next year.
Bye,

Joke

Hello Joke,

I am so sorry to read that! I hope, you will get him staying quiet and calm the next time...
Does he not try to lick the fixation?
If yes and you need a protection against licking, I can recommend very much this type ( www.thorni.de/ ).

All the best for you
Veronica

What a awful thing to happen. Poor little chap. Give him a cuddle from me.

Do you remember last year WEE Walter from Mull who also broke his leg when very young? There is a thread on the forum with photos showing his external fixing. They seem to work very well with young fast growing pups.

What a poor baby - so he does not look so unhappy - just sweet . One of mine had a hairline fracture in her knee - happened at 4.5mths old roughly - even worse , as I had one of almost the same age ...no splinting/surgery - just waiting , and waiting and waiting for her ...took a long time to fully heal/become stable again , but , this was a different break at a different part of the hind leg . She was allowed on leash to come on the shorter ones of our daily walks and , after a bit , she also could play some with the others in the yard ..She is now almost 7 years old and turned out to be the happiest hound I ever had . Mawu sais hi to Connor btw , tells him , things will be ok soon and he'll be able to run and ( as in her case ) hunt full tilt again ....

Connor is still behaving very well. It's amazing how good he takes it all.
Being in a very limited space most of the day and night doesn't seem to bother him.
In the evening we give him a little more freedom in the living room so he can come over to us instead of having to wait untill we come to him.

Today we enjoyed a really nice, warm day outside:

Just 10 more days and then the fixation will be removed. Ofcourse we will have to be carefull for some time after that.
Untill then this is his world:

We cannot wait till he will be able to be a "normal" puppy.

Bye, Joke

Hurray, Connor is without his fixation!
Wednesday he was at the surgeon, who took some X-rays. They showed that the fracture healed perfectly.
So the screws etc were taken out of his leg.
Some small wounds are all that is left, this will heal very soon. O yes and no hair on his leg ofcourse, we are so used to this already. But that will come back as well.
We are all very relieved, so is Connor.
Ofcourse we have to be carefull for a bit longer, he has to learn to use his leg without the support of the screws again.
And he has to develope his muscles.
The first 2 weeks still only walking on the lead, then we will gradually increase the space for him in the garden.
So some more work to do, but I am convinced that everything will turn out okay.
I think we will be more frightened that something happens then he is.

On the pictures you see a relieved Connor, resting after his visit to the vet.

This was so sweet. Our neighbours children felt very sorry for him and wanted to do something.
So they made a "get well basket" for him:

Hope you all have a nice weekend, the forecast over here is quite good.

Bye, Joke

super to see Connor minus his nuts and bolts. I love the basket of goodies for him too, very thoughtful. Now you can slowly let him be a real puppy again and enjoy his antics. Have a good weekend - weather good for us too(Midlands)

Hi Liza,
That can happen, sometimes you just miss certain messages.
Connor is doing really well, as he has been all the time during his "emprisonment".
Here are some pictures of him where he is getting used to his freedom again.

Bye,
Joke
