I've removed quite a few post from this thread that were neither relevant nor productive - sorry if I've removed something I shouldn't, but I think the important parts of this thread are still present.
I'm unlocking it on the proviso that we can keep to the point!
Thanks
Rob

In Ireland in the early 1900's there was, many believe significant cross over between the Irish Deerhound and Wolfhound, in an attempt to breed dogs free from Great Dane blood and influence. There is a famous photograph of O'Mahony the Knight of Kerry with a dog named "Con" that illustrates this type of dog. Unfortunately I cannot find a link to the picture but it was once included in the UK Deerhound Club Newsletter (Summer 2008). Some believe that this hound is behind many of today's Deerhounds, both UK and foreign.

Con was the father of bitch "Granua" who was mated to a Scottish deerhound. It is a known fact that pups from this litter went to Wolfhound kennels but at least one went to a deerhound Kennel. At that time puppies could be registered with "parents Unknown".
Then Wolfhounds were regularly mated with Deerhounds passing Deerhound blood to the Wolfhound population. There is much conjecture that there was a considerable intermingling of genes between Wolfhounds/Deerhounds in both directions. A Major Hugh Richardon was also imvolved in this practise. Interestingly his grand-daughter was the grandmother of the LoLoughreys who were the owners of the Ross Afix whose dogs are in many of our dogs pedigrees. Descendants of the early Wolfhound/deerhounds rich in working blood lines were in much demand in new world countries where they excelled at hunting large game.

My point to all of this is that maybe this is the reason why many Deerhounds are larger than others and I also wonder if this may have been a source of the Wheaten and lighter colours of past hounds. The colours may well have been lost after this cross breeding stopped and the genes responsible for these colours slowly weakened.

I've found a link that substantiates the above details of O'Mahoney, The Knight of Kerry and also much of the cross breeding between Wolfhounds and Deerhounds.

Hello Rob,

I have found today by my research this advertisement with a white Deerhound in the internet.

Link to the web site: kleinanzeigen.ebay.de/anz...eglich/21623011

She is from Spain and a "Irish" Deerhound/Podenco mix, is written in the German text.

Hello Rob,

I have found today, by my research in the internet, pictures with a nearly "white Deerhound".

The name of the web site is sighthound-pictures and the pictures are in the rubric Deerhound.

Maybe is the white Deerhound a lurcher (?).

Say Joerg your posting of this great old picture got me scrolling up a bit to Robb's link on the history of the Irish Wolfhound. Certainly worth reading for anyone who has a moment!
