Hi Rob,
How are you fixed for installing a chat module ?
I think it might be nice to have group chat.
There seem to be a few options : www.onestopjoomla.com/extensions/chat/

what do you think ?

Hi Steve
Perhaps I need to think about this again.
I looked at the live chat a few months/year ago. I was keen but I went off the idea for the following reasons.
  • Some of the Live chat components can be very processor intensive - extra load on the server.
  • Most who regularly use live chat use a better/more functional alternative such as M$ messenger, icq etc.
  • Difficult/impossible to moderate. There have been cases of abuse reported in the media, which put me right off at the time I was looking at this.

Its easy to install lots of different components and add seemingly loads of functionality, but they all have to be updated /patched regularly to keep up to date, future proof and secure. Hence the recent removal of the ads manager component and integration of the "for sale" section into the forum.
If enough want a chat room then it would be worth doing, but when I've looked at chat rooms on other forums they are often little used.
So if anyone else (I know Purple and you have asked for this) thinks this would be good and would use a chat room then post here or pm me.

What I am currently looking at is a voting system for suggestions to the site. There are some decent offsite offerings, such as uservoice[edit:just seen how much that costs - maybe look elsewhere!]. Every one gets 10 points and you can write a "I would like X for the site" people can put their points next to the features they would most like. A democratic way of deciding the way the site goes.

With the chat room, i know we use an offsite one on LL,
for the first few months everyone used it, now your lucky if one or two use it a night,
although if something kicks off on the forum, you do find everyone is in the chat room gossiping lol
we use the phpBB one, it has a forum part and chat room added,
cant remember how much it cost's per year though, the forum part gets regulary
invaded by spammers, because no one keeps an eye on that part.

one other thing, we find its verry rare any abuse happens, in the chat room,
but then again thouse who do use it, all know each other quite well,
and it does have private rooms, so if we need to speak to just a few people
we can go off in to another room.

I personally do not think that there are enough members to make a chat room viable. The time differences for our international members would mean that it would be hard for them to link up for chat. Anyway, do we have to be like 'other' sites?

Excuse me for being grumpy(those who know me will say nothing new there) but why do we need one?
Surely the forum is the chat room? If it's not moderateabububle :silly: then it could get personal and not funny.
Just feel that if we can't say what we think in public then is it worth saying? B) :side:

Rob maybe it could be set up so that members have to have at least 50 or even a hundred posts before being able to access the live chat. This would prevent trolling and hopefully we would have some idea of what the regulars are like :P
Also could put a waiver up as in "enter at own risk".
If people get offended they get out.
Just a thought :)

I'm not saying it's not a good idea just questioning what the purpose would be?

The forums are in a way quite formal, as it is a Deerhound forum, one would expect to find only discussions regarding Deerhounds (Off Topic , excepted) and quite rightly so.

As one builds up relationships, you might want to talk more about family, holidays, life outside of Deerhounds ( is there is any !?!) Having a live forum will enable us to do this, and also it won't be recorded for all and sundry to read at a later date.

God if you had have been in some of the convos we have - when we do go in to the chat room,
you would probably be shocked lol, we talk about everything and anything,
have a laugh, sometimes it ends up in the gutter, but quite a few of us know each other
so we know when its a joke, a live chat room is totaly different to a forum,
with a forum you are limited and you never realy get to know a person properly,
with a chat room you can do that, on ours we say what we want, its much easer talking to people
and if you feel you dont want to talk, some do just watch sit and watch the convo.

Registered users will see a chat option in the top menu now. I;ve not even tried it yet so have a go and let me know any problems. I might have to take it off and tweak it a bit...

I think it will end up getting confusing with two rooms open,
as if theres one convo going on in one and another going off in the other,
people will end up switching back and forth.

Looking at it its the same type as we have been useing,
have just checked and if people want they can have private rooms open
dont mean the pm facility, but you can open a private room and invite who you want in to it,
so if people needed to say meet to chat and sort something out,
then you can do that,

Is there any way of seeing in a window who's in the chat room and what's hapening without entering,to save logging in just to find everyone's gone to bed?

Only by making the chat room public. Which would be ok - perhaps. What do you think?

You can see who's in the chat room now if you look on the home page - right hand column under who's chatting.
I went in there for a bit and talked to myself, it was very peaceful...
