It's a Scottish expression and there's no direct English equivalent: roughly, it means a big softie who likes to snuggle up to you and get into your good books, with a view to getting his own way later on.

Lol, I wondered what that was. All weekend at the Lure Coursing people kept saying Mac was a big sook ...
, I thought it was something like a "big suck up", so I spose I wasn't too far off.

Well, where to begin? I remember a little child, who had obviously been very well brought up to be safe around dogs, asking me 'Is your doggy a clapping doggy?' Since the doggy in question was a Deerhound, and used to my kids, I had no hesitation in assuring her that yes, indeed my doggy was a clapping doggy. The child then proceeded to pet the aforementioned doggy and make a huge fuss of him. Basically, to clap a dog means to stroke and make much of it.

I also live in Scotland having emigrated from Cheshire England 10 years ago. My dogs are always being called "big Sook's" = Big Softies. When it rains in a certain way it is "Dreek", & can I clap your dogs = Can I give your dogs a hug/stroke/cuddle was one that threw me for a while - I thought at first that they wanted to clap my dogs coz they are so well behaved !!! ( OK so I might be a wee biased here)

Happy Easter everyone :)

I didn't know that "sook" was a scottish term as I have always used it. Lockie is always referred to as "a big sook" and if the dogs get needy they are called sooky. Mind you Mum was from Scottish stock. Have never heard of "clapping" but will remember it for future reference :)
